Abstract:
Since its establishment in 1979, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been more hostile to the Jews and Israel than any other Islamic state. Discusses possible reasons for this, noting that revolutionary regimes tend to use external enemies to strengthen their own positions. In the case of Iran, hatred toward Israel encompasses a large part of its ideology: the denial of a Jewish state's right to exist; enmity toward Western imperialism and capitalism, represented by Israel; and hatred of the Shah and his policies, one of which was dealing with Israel. Iranian leaders use hostility toward Israel and the Jews to cover up failures in other spheres, and to justify controversial policies. Discusses works by Ayatullah Ruhollah Khomeini, in which he states that Zionism is the latest manifestation of Jewish oppression of Islam. Notes that Zionism and Judaism have become interchangeable in Islamist rhetoric. Iranian leaders also use Holocaust denial to delegitimize Israel, and absolutely oppose any peace agreement, insisting that Israel must be destroyed.
