Reuvin Snir studies the contribution of Palestinian literature and theatre to Palestinian nation-building, especially since the 1948 Nakba. Becoming an essential part of the vocabulary of Arab intellectuals and writers, since the 1950s commitment (iltizām) has been employed to indicate the necessity for a writer to convey a message rather than merely create an imaginative work for its own sake.     Abstract: Nationalsozialistische Bücherverbrennungen in Deutschland 1933 wurden im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland in konzertierten Aktionen hunderttausende Bücher missliebiger Autor:innen öffentlich verbrannt. Diese Bücherverbrennungen waren mehr als nur eine kulturpolitische Säuberungsaktion, sie waren zentraler Bestandteil im komplexen Gefüge des nationalsozialistischen Machtdurchsetzungsprozesses. Sie in ihrer Gesamtheit zu betrachten, hat sich das Projekt Verbrannte Orte zum Ziel gesetzt und mittlerweile über 160 Bücherverbrennungen dokumentiert: als Fotografien jener Orte, wie sie heute aussehen. Sie zeigen unspektakuläre Plätze der Alltäglichkeit, nur an wenigen weisen Erinnerungszeichen auf das Geschehene hin. Wie aber betrachten wir diese Orte, wenn wir wissen, was dort passiert ist? Eine Auswahl der Fotografien steht im Mittelpunkt des Buches. Ergänzt werden diese durch Texte, welche die Hintergründe der Bücherverbrennungen beleuchten. Einige Biografien betroffener Autor:innen werden vorgestellt und durch einen detaillierten Blick auf das Thema Exil begleitet. Außerdem wird erörtert, was die Bücherverbrennungen von 1933 mit Demokratie und Meinungsfreiheit von heute zu tun haben

    Abstract: Much can be learned about a translation’s linguistic and cultural context by studying it as a text, a literary artifact of the culture that produced it. However, its nature as a translation warrants a careful approach, one that pays attention to the process by which its various features came about. In Characterizing Old Greek Deuteronomy as an Ancient Translation, Jean Maurais develops a framework derived from Descriptive Translation Studies to bring both these aspects in conversation. He then outlines how the Deuteronomy translator went about his task and provides a characterization of the work as a literary product

    Abstract: A close reading of postrevolutionary Russian and Yiddish literature and film recasts the Soviet Jew as a novel cultural figure: not just a minority but an ambivalent character navigating between the Jewish past and Bolshevik modernity. The Russian Revolution of 1917 transformed the Jewish community of the former tsarist empire. In particular, the Bolshevik government eliminated the requirement that most Jews reside in the Pale of Settlement in what had been Russia’s western borderlands. Many Jews quickly exited the shtetls, seeking prospects elsewhere. Some left for bigger cities, others for Europe, America, or Palestine. Thousands tried their luck in the newly established Jewish Autonomous Region in the Far East, where urban merchants would become tillers of the soil. For these Jews, Soviet modernity meant freedom, the possibility of the new, and the pressure to discard old ways of life. This ambivalence was embodied in the Soviet Jew—not just a descriptive demographic term but a novel cultural figure. In insightful readings of Yiddish and Russian literature, films, and reportage, Sasha Senderovich finds characters traversing space and history and carrying with them the dislodged practices and archetypes of a lost Jewish world. There is the Siberian settler of Viktor Fink’s Jews in the Taiga, the folkloric trickster of Isaac Babel, and the fragmented, bickering family of Moyshe Kulbak’s The Zemlenyaners, whose insular lives are disrupted by the march of technological, political, and social change. There is the collector of ethnographic tidbits, the pogrom survivor, the émigré who repatriates to the USSR. Senderovich urges us to see the Soviet Jew anew, as not only a minority but also a particular kind of liminal being. How the Soviet Jew Was Made emerges as a profound meditation on culture and identity in a shifting landscape

    Abstract: Eldon Jay Epp's second volume of collected essays consists of articles previously published during 2006-2017. All treat aspects of the New Testament textual criticism, but focus on historical and methodological issues relevant to constructing the earliest attainable text of New Testament writings. More specific emphasis falls upon the nature of textual transmission and the text-critical process, and heavily on the criteria employed in establishing that earliest available text. Moreover, textual grouping is examined at length, and prominent is the current approach to textual variants not approved for the constructed text, for they have stories to tell regarding theological, ethical, and real-life issues as the early Christian churches sought to work out their own status, practices, and destiny

    Abstract: In The Theological Profile of the Peshitta of Isaiah , Attila Bodor explores theological elements in the book of Isaiah as represented in the Peshitta. Through a close study of its interpretative renderings, the author shows that this lesser-known ancient version is not only an important witness to textual history and a repository of early exegetical traditions but also testifies to the beliefs of the early Syriac-speaking community from which the Peshitta emerged. In the monograph, sixty-three Peshitta divergences from the Hebrew version of Isaiah are collected and analyzed in order to illustrate the theological implications and the impact of these divergent renderings on the interpretation and reception of the major Isaianic themes that treat God, the Messiah, and the people of God

    Abstract: More than 70 years after the end of National Socialism, the growing distance in time to historical events characterizes the examination of them. Changed family relationships, the farewell to eyewitnesses and current social discourses influence the perspectives of young people. This raises a multitude of questions: How are young people in Germany dealing with the topic more than seven decades after the Holocaust? What relevance does National Socialism have for you, what historical ideas do you have of the time and how do you experience dealing with it in Germany? The study investigates these questions empirically using the group discussion process and the Grounded Theory methodology, looks at continuities and breaks in the references to National Socialism and shows connections to identification with Germany

    Abstract: "This volume both reflects on the contested nature of the Wisdom Literature category and takes advantage of the opportunities it presents for reconsidering the concept of wisdom more independently from it. The first half explores wisdom as a concept, with essays on its relationship to skill, epistemology, virtue, theology, and order in the Hebrew Bible, its meaning in related cultures, from Egypt and Mesopotamia to Patristic and Rabbinic interpretation, and, finally, its continuing relevance the modern world, including in Islamic, Jewish, and Christian thought, and from feminist, environmental, and other contextual perspectives. The latter half considers "Wisdom Literature" as a category. Scholars address its relation to the Solomonic Collection, its social setting, literary genres, chronological development, and theology. Wisdom Literature's relation to other biblical literature (law, history, prophecy, apocalyptic, and the broad question of "Wisdom influence") is then discussed before separate chapters on the texts commonly associated with the category. Contributors take a variety of approaches to the current debates surrounding the viability and value of the Wisdom Literature category and its proper relationship to the concept of wisdom in the Hebrew Bible. Though the organization of the volume highlights the independence of wisdom as concept from "Wisdom Literature" as category, seeking to counter the lack of attention given to this question in the traditional approach, the inclusion of both topics together in the same volume reflects their continued interconnection. As such, this handbook both represents the current state of Wisdom scholarship and sets the stage for future developments"--

Reflecting on the weight assigned to different possible errors that could be made and examining the norms of uncertainty opens a window for understanding the early rabbinic that reflected rules aimed not at avoidance but rather at dwelling in the midst of uncertainty, thus rejecting sectarian isolationism meant to minimize a community's friction with uncertainty"--
    Abstract: "In the history of halakhah, the treatment of uncertainty became one of the most complex fields of intense study. In his latest book, Moshe Halbertal focuses on examining the point of origin of the study of uncertainty in early rabbinic literature. Halbertal explores instructions concerning how to behave in situations of uncertainty ranging from matters of ritual purity, to lineage and marriage, to monetary law, and to the laws of forbidden foods in the Mishnah, Tosefta, and halakhic midrashim. This examination of the rules of uncertainty introduced in early rabbinic literature reveals that these rules were not aimed at avoiding but rather at dwelling in the midst of uncertainty, thus rejecting the sectarian isolationism that sought to minimize a community’s experience of and friction with uncertainty."--Page 4 of printed paper wrapper

    Abstract: "Zum Celan-Jahr 2020. Kein anderes Gedicht hat nach 1945 solche Berühmtheit erlangt wie Paul Celans "Todesfuge". Entstanden unter dem unmittelbaren Eindruck der Ermordung seiner Eltern durch die Nationalsozialisten, gilt es als eines der frühesten literarischen Zeugnisse im Angesicht der Shoah. Thomas Sparr zeichnet die Geschichte dieses Gedichts nach, das wie kein zweites deutschsprachiges Werk in der Nachkriegszeit eine ganze Epoche ins Bild setzt und eine enorme, bis heute andauernde internationale Wirkungsgeschichte entfaltet. Er spannt den Bogen von seiner Entstehung über seine zunächst kontroverse Aufnahme in den 1950er Jahren bis hin zu den Literaten und Künstlern, die sich bis in unsere Tage davon inspirieren lassen.     Abstract: Der „Ewige Jude“ stand auf dem Index der verbotenen Bücher – das lässt aufhorchen: Kämpfte die katholische Kirche so gegen antisemitische Stereotype? Dieser Frage geht der Autor anhand der Verfahren gegen die französischen Autoren Edgar Quinet und Eugène Sue nach, die das Motiv des Ewigen Juden im 19. Jahrhundert neu interpretierten. Der detaillierte Einblick in den Alltag der Zensoren ist entlarvend: In den Archiven der Inquisition und der Indexkongregation sind irreführende Gutachten zu finden, die für ihre Verfasser nur noch Mittel zu dem Zweck waren, sich in den revolutionären Kämpfen ihrer Zeit richtig zu positionieren. Mitarbeiter der zuständigen Kongregationen waren völlig überfordert, und Bücher wurden sogar ohne vorherige Lektüre verboten. Die unverzichtbare Analyse weiterer, zeitgleich ablaufender Verfahren im Kontext der kirchenpolitischen Großwetterlage zeigt schließlich: Der „Ewige Jude“ geriet nicht wegen Antisemitismus in den Blick der Zensoren, sondern weil insbesondere Sue als antijesuitisch, unmoralisch, sozialistisch und revolutionär galt

    Abstract: "Anti-Heimat Cinema: The Jewish Invention of the German Landscape studies an overlooked yet fundamental element of German popular culture in the twentieth century. In tracing Jewish filmmakers' contemplations of "Heimat"--A provincial German landscape associated with belonging and authenticity-it analyzes their distinctive contribution to the German identity discourse between 1918 and 1968. In its emphasis on rootedness and homogeneity Heimat seemed to challenge the validity and significance of Jewish emancipation. Several acculturation-seeking Jewish artists and intellectuals, however, endeavored to conceive a notion of Heimat that would rather substantiate their belonging. This book considers Jewish filmmakers' contribution to this endeavor. It shows how they devised the landscapes of the German "Homeland" as Jews, namely, as acculturated, "outsiders within." Through appropriation of generic Heimat imagery, the films discussed in the book integrate criticism of national chauvinism into German mainstream culture from World War One to the Cold War. Consequently, these Jewish filmmakers anticipated the anti-Heimat film of the ensuing decades, and functioned as an uncredited inspiration for the critical New German Cinema"--
