Abstract:
German politicians and society are determined to keep the growing Jewish community in the country - the presence of Jews is proof that Germany has developed into a democracy and has a diverse, open society. Besides, the authorities and the public assign to the Jewish community additional roles - Jews as victims of the Holocaust; Jews as admonishers against neo-Nazism and antisemitism; Jews as representatives of Israel, and thus targets of "anti-imperialist" hatred; and Jews as outsiders and exotic people. Notes that the present-day German public is losing interest in the memory of the Holocaust, does not see Jews as the absolute victims of Nazism, and is prone to relativize the Holocaust, or at least to broaden its framework by including other victims - Gypsies, homosexuals, etc. There is a tendency to compare the Holocaust to Israeli actions in the Middle East conflict and to regard German Jews as bearing responsibility for these actions. Antisemitism is conceived in Germany as something that emanates from the right-wing only, and there are no large-scale activities against leftist antisemitism and that of the Islamists.
