Abstract:
Analyzes political repercussions of the Kasztner trial which opened in Jerusalem in 1954. Discusses, also, the Israeli public's attitudes toward the reactions of Jews, and particularly their leaders, during the Holocaust. The court's verdict (acquitting Grunwald, whom Kasztner had sued for libel) supported the prevalent view that leaders and heads of Jewish Councils in Europe had prevented mass resistance, and that only the youth movements had had the courage to fight. Since Eichmann's trial (1961) there has been a tendency to try to understand rather than to judge.
