Abstract:
Reflects on the causes of antisemitism, which is no doubt the longest hatred in history. Recent antisemitic incidents shattered two illusions: that democracy is an antidote against this phenomenon, and that the establishment of a Jewish state would spell the end of antisemitism. Today, the borderline between anti-Zionism and antisemitism is completely blurred. The State of Israel has become the "collective Jew" in the eyes of anti-Zionists. Contends that antisemitism is rooted in Jewish "rejectionism" or reluctance to adopt the values of the stronger side, be it another religion or the ruling regime. In the Middle East and amongst the European Left, Jews are a symbol of all that is menacing in the democratic West. Anti-Americanism, both in the Islamic world and in Europe, is linked to and bears an uncanny resemblance to antisemitism.
