Abstract:
Traces the treatment of the subject in Romanian historiography from the immediate postwar years through the post-communist period. Deals with Holocaust denial, specifically the whitewashing of the responsibility of Ion Antonescu for the deaths of thousands of Jews, both before, during, and after their deportation to Transnistria from Bessarabia, Bukovina, and Dorohoi. Nationalism is presented as a major factor in creating a benign image of Romania, an image based on falsification of history; in fact, Antonescu's orders led to the mass murder of Jews before Nazi Germany adopted the "final solution" at Wannsee. In the post-communist period, efforts have been made to rehabilitate Ionescu as a national hero rather than a fascist. However, in the late 1990s there are signs of a recognition of the country's responsibility for the mass murder of Jews (e.g. the letter of President Constantinescu that admits Romanian participation in the Holocaust, and the initiation of Holocaust study in high schools).
