Abstract:
Discusses Britain's first Holocaust memorial center, opened in 1995, focusing on two features. Firstly, the Beth Shalom Holocaust education center was established by a non-Jew, Stephen Smith, and basically funded by non-Jews. Against the background of a lack of interest in the Holocaust by Britons, including British Jews, Beth Shalom conveys the message that all should be interested and that Christians need to atone for Christianity's role in the Holocaust. The second issue considered is the out-of-the-way location of the center in Laxton, Nottinghamshire, and its symbolism. For England, the site (representing the country's unfenced-in, natural past) is marginal, just as the Holocaust is to today's English/Anglo-Jewish consciousness. Beth Shalom may serve as a site of pilgrimage, where those who visit are transformed.
