Abstract:
Discusses Holocaust denial and antisemitism in southern Brazil in light of the Castan case. Exposed by anti-racist groups in 1987, Siegfried Ellwanger Castan, owner of the antisemitic publishing house Revisão Editora, was sentenced to two years in prison with a reprieve in 1996. Castan's appeal for habeas corpus was approved by the Supreme Federal Court in 2002, under the contention that Castan's antisemitic publications were not racist because "the Jews are a people, not a race". Pp. 144-151 present a summary of Blikstein's comments on the decision, which he submitted to the Supreme Court in March 2003. They emphasize the effect of Castan's publications in the region of southern Brazil, and the relationship between antisemitism and racism. In September 2003 the Supreme Court rejected Castan's habeas corpus, confirming his sentence. Concludes that Holocaust denial still thrives in southern Brasil, home to many European immigrants and some surviving Nazis.
