Abstract:
Discusses Jewish acceptance of the Christian accusation of deicide in the medieval period. Focuses on the book "Sefer toldot Yeshu" ("The Book of Jesus' Life"), a Jewish biography of Jesus which appeared in several versions in the Middle Ages, as an example of counter-history. This book, a satire, presents a different story of Jesus' life and death from that found in the New Testament, and claims that Jesus was killed by the Jews in accordance with Jewish law. Discusses the ideology of the Crusaders, to whom it seemed logical that the Jews should be punished for Jesus' death and for their refusal to believe in him. The Jews themselves did not deny killing Jesus; both "Sefer toldot Yeshu" and Jewish chronicles from the period of the Crusades accept responsibility for his death. However, modern Jewish research on Jesus' life and death does not agree with this view. Joseph Klausner's "Yeshu ha-notsri" (1922) stresses Jesus' Judaism and maintains that he attempted to undermine the laws of Judaism, but points out that it was the Romans who killed him, as related in the New Testament.
