Abstract:
Describes the role of Lucienne Clément de L'Épine (1911-1995) in the rescue of Jewish children. When the first anti-Jewish Vichy laws came into effect in 1939, Clément took the children of Jewish friends from Paris to their nanny in Sarthe, 200 kilometers away. She began working for an organization, the "SF, service familial clandestin de placement des enfants", organized by Juliette Stern based on resources of the defunct WIZO organization. The SF received money from the Joint, the Keren Kayemeth, and UGIF. Clément conveyed children from an UGIF home in Paris to host families in various regions, mostly in Sarthe, a stronghold of the resistance. Thanks to Clément, 104 Jewish children found refuge with ca. 60 families there. She also helped rescue about 60 children during a roundup in the 18th arrondissement in Paris. In addition to escorting the children, who were increasingly threatened by arrests in Paris from February 1943 on, Clément gave money to the host families and saw to the children's welfare. After the liberation she organized the return of some of them to Paris. She was recognized as a Righteous among the Nations by Yad Vashem in 1990.
