Abstract:
In view of the paucity of literature on Jewish folklore in the German language, discusses the appearance of a third edition of Adolf Bach's "Deutsche Volkskunde" (1960), first published in 1937. One short chapter deals with Jewish folklore. Protests that, in the new edition, Nazi racial theories are reprinted, along with a comment that even if such elements have been condemned since 1945 they cannot be completely ignored. Notes that under the Hitler regime, German folklorists refused to include the topic of German Jews in their research, claiming that they did not belong to German folklore. Similar objections were already raised in 1898 when the Society for German Jewish Folklore was founded, as folklore was considered an essential part of the nationalistic, chauvinist tradition. Surveys the traditional negative image of Jews in German literature, which contributed to the spread of antisemitism.
