Abstract:
A study of voluntary conversions of individual Jews to Christianity before 1391, comparing and contrasting the Sephardic experience in Spain with the Ashkenazic experience in northern Europe (mainly Germany). Relates to the motivations of those who converted, the reactions of the Church (enthusiasm) and of the Jewish communities (anger), the reactions of individual Christians (suspicion and antisemitism) and individual Jewish people (verbal and even physical attacks against apostates), and the return of some converts to Judaism after they realized they were not welcome in Christian communities.
