Abstract:
In 1449 a riot broke out in Toledo, which soon turned against the Conversos living in the city. Following the riot, Toledan Conversos were brought to trial for Judaizing, many of them were deprived of official posts, and the Old Christians issued a statute which forbade New Christians to hold office in Toledo and its vicinity. An ecclesiastical trial of converts accused of "Judaizing" was held, leading to some executions, and much property was confiscated. Nicholas V issued a bull condemning any effort to segregate or penalize converts from Judaism. In the Curia, the leading Dominican theologian Cardinal Juan de Torquemada published the "Tractatus contra Madianitas et Ismaelitas" in 1450, in which he denounced the proceedings held against the Conversos. In his view, the persecution of Conversos was un-Christian. Torquemada's defense of the Conversos was ignored in his native Castile, where the authorities set off on a path of persecution of the Conversos.
