Abstract:
Seventy Jewish families exiled from Prague found refuge in January-March 1745 with rural Jewish communities in the lands of Heinrich von Auersperg, who received them freely but imposed the usual tax on strangers and did not permit them to work or engage in trade. Maria Theresia's announced program to exile the Jews from the entire country disturbed not only the Jews but also Auersperg, who would have lost a substantial part of his revenues. Eventually she abandoned the plan, and in 1748 permitted the Jews to return to Prague. The empoverished refugees outnumbered their local hosts, who had to share their already crowded quarters with them; they also became a financial burden. Most of them moved on within a few weeks or months.
