    Abstract: Much of the most recent research on Jewish scepticism was inspired by the work of the early modern Venetian rabbi Simone Luzzatto, the first thinker in the history of Jewish thought to declare himself a sceptic and a follower of the New Academy. This collected volume shines new light on the intimate relationship between Luzzatto’s sceptical thinking and an era marked by paradoxes and contrasts between religious devotion and scientific rationalism, as well as between the rabbinic-biblical Jewish tradition and the open tendency towards engagement with non-Jewish philosophical, literary, scientific, and theological cultures. It plots out an original path along which to understand Luzzatto’s scepticism by pointing to the various facets of being a Jewish sceptic in seventeenth-century Italy.

    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

    Abstract: Theology is the science of the incomprehensible. Understood as an independent university discipline, it offers multifaceted perspectives that require not only an interdisciplinary but also an epistemological balancing act. Scientific theology in this sense is always exchange, reflection, encounter, and positioning as well as a form of transcendence. In thirteen contributions, the international authors shed light on the phenomenon of theology as an independent scientific discipline from different disciplinary, but also epistemological and religious points of view, which always oscillates between tradition, its own reflexivity and its relation to the world. The common characteristic feature is the border crossing along the intangible. The volume was produced in the context of the DFG-funded Research Training Group 1728 Theology as Science at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main
    Abstract: Theologie ist die Wissenschaft vom Unbegreifbaren. Als eigenständige universitäre Disziplin verstanden bietet sie facettenreiche Perspektiven, die nicht nur einen interdisziplinären, sondern zugleich epistemologischen Balanceakt erfordern. Wissenschaftliche Theologie in diesem Sinne ist immer Austausch, Reflexion, Begegnung und Positionierung sowie eine Form von Transzendenz. In dreizehn Beiträgen beleuchten die internationalen Autor*innen aus unterschiedlichen disziplinären, aber auch erkenntnistheoretischen und religiösen Standpunkten das Phänomen von Theologie als eigenständiger wissenschaftlicher Disziplin, die stets zwischen Tradition, einer ihr eigenen Reflexivität und dem Bezug zur Welt changiert. Das ihnen gemeinsame kennzeichnende Merkmal ist der je unternommene Grenzgang entlang des Ungreifbaren.     Abstract: "The international conference "Psalms in Rituals from Antiquity to the Present," held on October 24-26, 2018, at the Max-Weber Kolleg in the University of Erfurt, Germany, aimed to showcase and also to build upon recent developments in what has become a very exciting field, bringing to it the distinctive perspective of the Research Centre "Dynamics of Jewish Ritual Practices in Pluralistic Contexts from Antiquity to the Present," which hosted the event. The Research Centre, which was funded from 2015 to 2020 by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), investigated the dynamic relationship of rituals in pluralistic contexts and specifically in Jewish and Christian religious traditions.     Abstract: Jewish music has become the subject of a respectable literature in different academic disciplines and a touchstone of public and intellectual discourse in such diverse fields as the performing arts and religious studies, the visual arts and philology, cultural studies, and librarianship, and spanning topics that extend to almost all continents. As a forward-looking and multidisciplinary endeavor, The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Music Studies maps this emerging field within the framework of spatiality, temporality, and collectivity as analytical and conceptual categories. It does so by embracing all hemispheres, and interrogating Jewish music’s meaning of various places and spaces across the temporal frame of antiquity through the early twenty-first century. The introductory chapter provides a theoretical foundation that paves the way for the rich selection of case studies brought together in the subsequent sections. These case studies document the different facets of Jewish music and theorize its multivalent correlation with spaces and collectives around the world. The thirty diverse chapters, conceived by an international team of thirty-one outstanding scholars, are divided into eight thematically organized sections, the first of which addresses Jewish music in various lands and territories (some without defined borders in time and space), followed by sections that focus on cities, as well selected spaces therein—ghetto, concert hall, archive, and sacred and ritual spaces. These sections, which largely look at actual and concrete spaces (roughly presented in the order of scale), are followed by the phenomenological spaces of destruction and remembrance, and shekhinah, that is, divine presence.

Im »heimatlichen Mythos« des geheimnisvollen Außenseiters, dem Unverständnis und Misstrauen entgegenschlägt und der schließlich eines gewaltsamen Todes stirbt, fand der unter dem Antisemitismus seiner Umwelt leidende deutsche Jude ein Bild der eigenen Existenz. Und er war fest überzeugt davon, dass Kaspar Hauser tatsächlich der badische Erbprinz war. All dies belegen eindrücklich die hier versammelten Studien und Selbstzeugnisse sowie der Briefwechsel mit Hermann Pies (1888–1983), der durch Wassermanns Roman zu seinen bahnbrechenden Kaspar-Hauser-Forschungen angeregt wurde. Neben "Caspar Hauser oder Die Trägheit des Herzens" (1908) ist heute vor allem noch der Justizroman "Der Fall Maurizius" (1928) bekannt, mit seinen Nachfolgebänden "Etzel Andergast" (1931) und "Joseph Kerkhovens dritte Existenz" (1934). Als erschütterndes Zeitbild und Selbstzeugnis ist auch "Mein Weg als Deutscher und Jude" (1921) unvermindert relevant. Von den Nationalsozialisten aus Deutschland vertrieben, starb Jakob Wassermann, verarmt und seelisch gebrochen, am 1. Januar 1934 im österreichischen Altaussee.

    Abstract: In this bold and provocative new book, Damani Partridge examines the possibilities and limits for a universalized Black politics. German youth of Turkish, Arab, and African descent use claims of Blackness to hold states and other institutions accountable for racism today. Partridge tracks how these young people take on the expressions of Black Power, acting out the scene from the 1968 Olympics, proclaiming ";I am Malcolm X,"; expressing mutual struggle with Muhammad Ali and Spike Lee, and standing with raised and clenched fists next to Angela Davis. Partridge also documents public school teachers, federal program leaders, and politicians demanding that young immigrants account for the global persistence of anti-Semitism as part of the German state's commitment to anti-genocidal education. He uses these stories to interrogate the relationships between European Enlightenment, Holocaust memory, and Black futures, showing how noncitizens work to reshape their everyday lives. In doing so, he demonstrates how Blackness is a concept that energizes, inspires, and makes possible participation beyond national belonging for immigrants, refugees, Black people, and other People of Color

The National Socialist era still has repercussions on society today. But how is the Shoah addressed in studies and teaching? This book examines the history of the impact of the Shoah in various settings of education and reflects on the theoretical and empirical research to date. Knowledge about and references to the Shoah continue to be transmitted between generations and at the same time are continuously updated in institutional and discursive contexts of contemporary society. This affects educators in several ways: in their own biographies and learning histories and in their subsequent teaching practice. The authors deal, among other things, with the politics of memory, the inheritance of feelings and the possibility of addressing the Shoah in various socialisation processes.

    Abstract: Collaborative engagement between activist academics from Israel and Northern Ireland highlighted the challenges and potential of working through education to promote shared learning and shared life in divided societies. Following these initial explorations, the volume brought together educationalists from Europe, the United States and South Africa to widen the range of experience and insights, and broaden the base of the conversation. The result is this book on the role of shared education, not only in deeply divided societies, but also in places where minorities face discrimination, where migrants face prejudice and barriers, or where society fails to deal positively with cultural diversity. Together, the contributors challenged themselves to develop theoretical and practical paradigms, based on practical knowledge and experience, to promote activist pedagogies. Their shared purpose was to work for more humane, just and democratic societies, in which education offers genuine hope for sustained transformational change. The four main themes around which the book is organized are: educating for democratic-multicultural citizenship, models of shared learning, nurturing intercultural competencies, and reconciling dialogue in the face of conflicting narratives. The book draws on a wide range of international perspectives and insights to identify practical strategies for change in local contexts

So lässt Hermann die Mentalität des Biedermeier in atmosphärischer Dichte aufleben, ohne die sozialen Spannungen und deren individuelle Konsequenzen auszublenden. Der 1906 erschienene Erfolgsroman erlebte allein bis Anfang der 1920er Jahre über einhundert Auflagen.

    Abstract: "More than Parcels: Wartime Aid for Jews in Nazi-Era Camps and Ghettos edited by Jan Lánícek and Jan Lambertz explores the horrors of the Holocaust by focusing on the systematic starvation of Jewish civilians confined to Nazi ghettos and camps. The modest relief parcel, often weighing no more than a few pounds and containing food, medicine, and clothing, could extend the lives and health of prisoners. For Jews in occupied Europe, receiving packages simultaneously provided critical emotional sustenance in the face of despair and grief. Placing these parcels front and center in a history of World War II challenges several myths about Nazi rule and Allied responses. First, the traffic in relief parcels and remittances shows that the walls of Nazi detention sites and the wartime borders separating Axis Europe from the outside world were not hermetically sealed, even for Jewish prisoners. Aid shipments were often damaged or stolen, but they continued to be sent throughout the war. Second, the flow of relief parcels-and prisoner requests for them-contributed to information about the lethal nature of Nazi detention sites. Aid requests and parcel receipts became one means of transmitting news about the location, living conditions, and fate of Jewish prisoners to families, humanitarians, and Jewish advocacy groups scattered across the globe. Third, the contributors to More than Parcels reveal that tens of thousands of individuals, along with religious communities and philanthropies, mobilized parcel relief for Jews trapped in Europe. Recent histories of wartime rescue have focused on a handful of courageous activists who hid or led Jews to safety under perilous conditions. The parallel story of relief shipments is no less important.     Abstract: These essays reflect the lively debate about the sectarian movement of the Scrolls. They debate the degree to which the movement was separated from the rest of Judaism, and whether there was one or several watershed moments in the separation. Notable contributions include a cluster of essays on the Teacher of Righteousness and a thorough survey of the archaeology of Qumran. The texts are problematic in historical research because they rely on biblical stereotypes. Nonetheless, possible interpretations can be compared and degrees of probability debated. Als die Gewalt in die Kleinstadt Slovetschno kam, ist Rosa Zaks erst sieben Jahre alt. Doch sie wird ihr Leben lang nicht vergessen können, wie sie und ihre Geschwister mitten in der Nacht von der Mutter geweckt und auf den Dachboden des Nachbarhauses gebracht wurden. Aus ihrem Versteck müssen die Kinder mit ansehen, wie ein Pogrom gegen die jüdischen Bewohner des Ortes entfesselt wird... Anhand von lange vernachlässigtem Archivmaterial, darunter Tausende neu entdeckte Zeugenaussagen, Prozessakten und offizielle Anordnungen, zeigt der renommierte Historiker Jeffrey Veidlinger, warum die Pogrome in Osteuropa eine Art Vorgeschichte des Holocaust bilden. Das überaus differenzierte Bild dieser heute weitgehend in Vergessenheit geratenen Ereignisse, das durch die Geschichten von Überlebenden, Tätern, Mitarbeitern von Hilfsorganisationen und Regierungsvertretern entsteht, verdeutlicht, warum die Juden "mitten im zivilisierten Europa" in akuter Gefahr waren, vernichtet zu werden - und ganz Europa davon wusste.

    Abstract: A History of Anti-Semitism examines the history, culture and literature of antisemitism from antiquity to the present. With contributions from an international team of scholars, whose essays were specially commissioned for this volume, it covers the long history of antisemitism starting with ancient Greece and Egypt, through the anti-Judaism of early Christianity, and the medieval era in both the Christian and Muslim worlds when Jews were defined as 'outsiders,' especially in Christian Europe. This portrayal often led to violence, notably pogroms that often accompanied Crusades, as well as to libels against Jews. The volume also explores the roles of Luther and the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the debate over Jewish emancipation, Marxism, and the social disruptions after World War 1 that led to the rise of Nazism and genocide. Finally, it considers current issues, including the dissemination of hate on social media and the internet and questions of definition and method.

    Abstract: William of Norwich is the name of a young boy purported to have been killed by Jews in or about 1144, thus becoming the victim of the first recorded case of such a ritual murder in Western Europe and a seminal figure in the long history of antisemitism. His story is first told in Thomas of Monmouth's The Life and Miracles of William of Norwich, a work that elaborates the bizarre allegation, invented in twelfth-century England, that Jews kidnapped Christian children and murdered them in memory and mockery of the crucifixion of Christ.In Inventing William of Norwich Heather Blurton resituates Thomas's account by offering the first full analysis of it as a specifically literary work. The second half of the twelfth century was a time of great literary innovation encompassing an efflorescence of saints' lives and historiography, as well as the emergence of vernacular romance, Blurton observes. She examines The Life and Miracles within the framework of these new textual developments and alongside innovations in liturgical and devotional practices to argue that the origin of the ritual murder accusation is imbricated as much in literary culture as it is in the realities of Christian-Jewish relations or the emergence of racially based discourses of antisemitism. Resisting the urge to interpret this first narrative of the blood libel with the hindsight knowledge of later developments, she considers only the period from about 1150-1200. In so doing, Blurton redirects critical attention away from the social and economic history of the ritual murder accusation to the textual genres and tastes that shaped its forms and themes and provided its immediate context of reception. Thomas of Monmouth's narrative in particular, and the ritual murder accusation more generally, were strongly shaped by literary convention

    Abstract: In 1965, five years after the capture of Adolf Eichmann in Buenos Aires, one of his Mossad abductors was sent back to South America to kill another fugitive Nazi, the so-called "butcher of Riga," Latvian Herberts Cukurs. Years later, the Latvian prosecutor general began investigating the possibility of redeeming Cukurs for his past actions. Researching the case, Kinstler discovered that her grandfather, Boris, had served in Cukurs's killing unit and was rumored to be a double agent for the KGB. The proceedings, which might have resulted in Cukurs's pardon, threw into question supposed "facts" about the Holocaust at the precise moment its last living survivors were dying. Kinstler's book is an examination of how history can become distorted over time, and how carelessly the guilty are sometimes reprieved. - adapted from jacket

    Abstract: Franz Oppenheimer (1864-1943) was a prominent German sociologist, economist and Zionist activist. As a co-founder of academic sociology in Germany, Oppenheimer vehemently opposed the influence of antisemitism on the nascent field. As an expert on communal agricultural settlement, Oppenheimer co-edited the scientific Zionist journal Altneuland (1904-1906), which became a platform for a distinct Jewish participation within the racial and colonial discourses of Imperial Germany. By positioning Zionist aspirations within a German colonial narrative, Altneuland presented Zionism as an extension, instead of a rejection, of German patriotism. By doing so, the journal’s contributors hoped to recruit new supporters and model Zionism as a source of secular Jewish identity for German Jewry. While imagining future relationships between Jews, Arabs, and German settlers in Palestine, Oppenheimer and his contemporaries also reimagined the place of Jews among European nations.

Mit dem Verblassen der Erinnerung an die Shoah, Sekundärantisemitismus und dem Glauben an ein geeintes Europa, das nationalstaatliche Denkweisen überwindet, findet sich ein zunehmend kritisches Denken gegenüber dem Zionismus. Israel wird zum “Juden unter den Völkern”. Antisemitische Kritik am Staat Israel kommt aus verschiedenen Richtungen: von rechts (Rassismus), links (Kapitalismuskritik und Antizionismus) und vom politischen Islam (Übernahme antijüdischer Polemik aus religiösen Schriften). Diese Mischung zeigt sich in sogenannten „Cultural Codes“, in Form von teils christlich, teils muslimisch geprägten Motiven, die jedoch einen antisemitischen Hintergrund haben. „Auge um Auge, Zahn um Zahn“, „Rache“ oder „Wallstreet“ sind solche codierten Schlagwörter, die sich regelmäßig auch in deutschsprachigen Medien finden. Raimund Fastenbauer vergleicht erstmals die Verwendung solcher antisemitischen Motive im Internet und anderen Medien islamisch geprägter Länder mit jenen in deutschsprachigen Printmedien und weist so den starken Einfluss nach, den diese „Codes“ in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung haben.

    Abstract: Neben dem Holocaust zählt die „Euthanasie“ zu den großen NS-Massenverbrechen. In diesem Band werden die Verflechtungen der beiden Verbrechenskomplexe auf Basis neuester Forschungsergebnisse intensiv untersucht. Die Zusammenhänge zwischen der nationalsozialistischen „Euthanasie“ und dem Holocaust sind noch immer nicht vollständig erforscht. Der Sammelband, zu dem namhafte Forscherinnen und Forscher beigetragen haben, beschäftigt sich mit den Beziehungen zwischen den beiden Mordprogrammen. Er benennt Kontinuitäten, Kausalitäten und parallele Entwicklungen. Dabei geht es um Themen wie Biopolitik, Eugenik und Zwangssterilisation, die Judenverfolgung in der Vorkriegszeit, die Morde im Rahmen der „Aktion T4“, die Krankenmorde in den Konzentrationslagern und im besetzten Polen, die „Aktion Reinhardt“ sowie die justizielle Ahndung der Verbrechen nach 1945. Die Untersuchungen erweitern unser Verständnis von den Verbrechen im Nationalsozialismus insgesamt und speziell zum Verhältnis von „Euthanasie“ und Holocaust.

    Abstract: In recent decades Orthodox Jewish women have sought new ways of participating in community life and in domestic and public rituals. This is a much-needed study of how new norms have emerged, influenced by both the rise of feminism and the backlash against it, and by new attitudes to women's religious roles.
    Abstract: Orthodox Jewish women are increasingly seeking new ways to express themselves religiously, and important changes have occurred in consequence in their self-definition and the part they play in the religious life of their communities. Drawing on surveys and interviews across different Orthodox groups in London, as well as on the author’s own experience of active participation over many years, this is a thoroughly researched study that analyses its findings in the context of related developments in Israel and the USA. Sympathetic attention is given to women’s creativity and sophistication as they struggle to develop new modes of expression that will let their voices be heard; at the same time, the inevitable points of conflict with the male-dominated religious establishment are examined and explained. There is a focus, too, on the impact of innovations in ritual: these include not only the creation of women-only spaces and women’s participation in public practices traditionally reserved for men, but also new personal practices often acquired on study visits to Israel which are replacing traditions learned from family members. This is a much-needed study of how new norms of lived religion have emerged in London, influenced by both the rise of feminism and the backlash against it, and also by women’s new understanding of their religious roles.
