Abstract:
Discusses Horthy's negotiations with the Allies between August-October 1944, in particular with the Russians, to arrange a secret surrender so that Hungary would be occupied by the Russians. In October, the Germans foiled these plans, aided by the antisemitic Arrow Cross Party which took over the Hungarian government. Analyzes Horthy's attitude toward the Jews - he wanted to save them because he thought that they were important to the Allies, and partly for humane reasons. In regard to the attitude of the Allied Powers toward the Jews, they were indifferent. Relates specifically to Budapest; by that time, the Jews of rural Hungary had all been deported.
