Abstract:
Traces the development of government policy regarding legal action against suspected war criminals who entered the USA. Examines the protracted legal battle (since 1977) to denaturalize and deport Ukrainian-born Treblinka guard Feodor Fedorenko. Discusses difficulties in prosecuting these cases, such as suspect Soviet evidence, translation problems, and the fallible memories of both the victims and the accused. After the case of Frank Walus, whose identity was not proved, the Office of Special Investigations in the Justice Department was set up. Describes the evidence against Fedorenko who admitted that he had entered the USA illegally but claimed that his service at Treblinka was involuntary. He was eventually stripped of citizenship by the Supreme Court and was deported to the Soviet Union in December 1984 where he was tried and sentenced to death in 1986. The second article deals with eleven cases which were prosecuted after Fedorenko - John (Ivan) Demjanjuk, Wolodymir Osidach, Karl Linnas, Michael Dercacz, Liudas Kairys, Kazys Palciauskas, Bohdan Koziy, Juozas Kungys, Elmars Sprogis, Serge Kowalchuk, Conrad Schellong. All of the above's citizenship was revoked, except for Sprogis.
