Abstract:
Summarizes the historical development of the purity of blood statutes in Spain between the 15th-17th centuries. Recognizes three stages: 1391-1449, 1449-1598, and 1598-1665. The first was a period of integration of the Jewish population into Christian society through massive conversions. The Conversos were accepted in the offices of the Church and in public administration, a fact which aroused strong opposition amongst Old Christians, leading to uprisings, massacres of Conversos, and attempts to establish, in 1449, the first purity of blood statute in Toledo. In the second stage (until the end of Philip II’s reign) the purity of blood statutes became widespread throughout Spain, resulting in the exclusion of Conversos from political and social institutions. The third stage extended through the reigns of Philip III and IV, both of whom limited their usage due to their negative effects on Spanish society. Finally, at the end of the 17th century, purity of blood was no longer an issue in Spanish society.
