Abstract:
Analyzes the discourse of the Spanish preacher Vicente Ferrer (1350-1419), known for his successful campaigns to convert the Jews to Christianity in the late 14th-early 15th centuries, based on Pedro M. Cátedra's "Sermón, sociedad y literatura en la Edad Media: San Vicente Ferrer en Castilla (1411-1412)" (1994), containing some of Ferrer's sermons which were directed at the Jews. Considers the content of two anti-Jewish sermons as a textual expression of segregationism toward Jews and the form of his sermons as characterized by a theatrical and sensational style. His preaching increased the already hostile atmosphere surrounding the Jews. Concludes that the persecutions of 1391 and the decadence of the Jewish communities created the appropriate environment for the success of his sermons.
