Abstract:
Discusses the significance, and the reception in Spain, of the anti-Islam and anti-Jewish sermons of the Franciscan preacher Cornelio Musso, bishop of the city of Bitonto (in Italy) and a prominent personality at the Council of Trento (1545-63). Pp. 140-147 deal with a sermon against the Jews which was delivered in the presence of Pope Pius IV in 1562, in the context of a repressive policy against the Jews and coinciding with the struggle of the Church against Protestantism. Asserts that the sermon should be understood not only as an expression of the negative attitude toward Jews in the Papal States, but also as a formula for rhetoric used to attack Protestant heresy indirectly. Some of Musso's sermons were translated into Spanish by the Dominican friar Diego de Zamora in 1602.
