Abstract:
Criticizes the views expressed by Tom Segev in his book "Ha-million ha-shvi'i" ("The Seventh Million", 1991); he contends that the Holocaust is a vital component of Israeli identity, stemming from the Yishuv's criminal neglect of European Jewry during World War II, and that the guilt complex is responsible for all subsequent Israeli policies. Points to distortions in Segev's account of three of the four projects undertaken by the Yishuv's leadership to rescue Jews in Europe. Concurs that there is a feeling of guilt in Israeli society that more was not done to save the Jews, but refutes the assumption of deliberate neglect of the issue at the time and that it permeates all of Israel's actions and decisions. States that although Segev intended to criticize Israeli actions and attitudes regarding the Holocaust, he himself is guilty of banalization of the Holocaust in taking a one-dimensional view of the events.
