Abstract:
This camp, in central Poland, was established by the German armaments firm Hugo Schneider A.G., Leipzig, and was in operation between 1942-44. Describes cultural activities initiated by the three groups of Jewish internees: the religious Jews, from Radom, organized communal prayers and symbolic holiday observances, and sang Yiddish songs of the shtetl; those from Majdanek, mainly Bund members, sang songs of the Jewish proletariat and Polish songs; those from Płaszów, some of them Zionists, sang Hebrew songs and spoke about Polish literature. In the camp, they all engaged in creative protest songs, prose pieces, and satirical verses. They even held performances of songs, recitations, and dancing. In the spring of 1944 the camp commander ordered two outdoor performances. Living conditions were improved due to fear of a drop in the production rate. With the approach of the Russians, the camp was liquidated at the end of July 1944. 600 prisoners were murdered; 250 escaped, but were killed by Germans, Ukrainians, or Poles; the rest were transferred to other camps.
