Abstract:
An address delivered by the Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal Bernardin, at the Center for Jewish and Christian Learning at the College of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota, and published in vol. 4 of the Center's "Proceedings (1989 Lecture Series)." Examines results of the "Nostra Aetate" declaration. Focuses on four areas: the increasingly important role of the Old Testament in the Catholic Church, the growing appreciation of Jesus' ties to the Jewish tradition, the sense of a deep bonding between the Church and the Jewish people, and the significance of the Holocaust. Discusses Pope John Paul II's role in these developments. Acknowledges that there has been widespread theological anti-Judaism in the history of Christianity, noting that "Nostra Aetate" has provided the possibility of changing this legacy. Points out that there are still tensions concerning the Holocaust, and denies accusations made by the Jewish community that the Catholic Church is "universalizing" the Holocaust and "appropriating" it.
