Abstract:
Describes the influence of personal experiences on the development of thought of Richard Rubenstein who concluded, following the Holocaust, that the traditional image of God is dead, putting forward his ideas in "After Auschwitz" (1966). Rubenstein rejected the Jewish doctrine of chosenness, which can lead to antisemitism. Because of their claim to a special vocation, the world makes unreasonable demands of the Jews, leading to hatred. The view that this vocation had passed to the Church led to Christian antisemitism. In the 1970s, Rubenstein moved away from theology and Jewish concerns, viewing the Holocaust as an extreme expression of rationality and modernity, to which the Judaeo-Christian itself had contributed.
