Kurzfassung:
Examines cinematic and televison depictions of Egyptian-Israeli relations. Notes that most productions have been superficial, with Egyptian-Israeli themes, like war and espionage, appearing to add a serious note to superficial dramas. However, this aspect of the films is very influential, especially because Egypt is a country in which illiteracy is widespread. The stereotypical presentation of alleged Israeli conspiracies against Egypt (e.g. Israeli attempts to corrupt Egyptian society with drugs, sex, etc., or to kill Egyptian opponents of normalization with Israel) is clearly anti-Zionist. Notes a possible basis for some of the charges against Israel, including popular dissatisfaction with the ongoing persecution of the Palestinians. also questions whether anti-Zionism is antisemitism. In any case, points to distortions in the depictions of Israel, and to the harm that is done to Egypt by distracting the country from a more realistic understanding of its problems, both with its Israeli neighbor and within its own borders.
