Abstract:
Based on findings of a study on public debate in the Swedish media held during the Lebanon War in 1982, and a similar examination of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in 2000-02, discusses antisemitism as a factor in the Swedish debate on Israel. The press debate on Israel is not only a major forum for antisemitism and a stimulus for the expression of pre-existing anti-Jewish (including Christian) sentiments and prejudices, but also the only public arena where negative attitudes toward Jews can be legitimately articulated. Such views have mainly been expressed by the Left, both in the wake of the Lebanon War and of the second "Intifada". Anti-Israel sentiment has also led to greater tolerance of antisemitism in the form of anti-Zionism in mainstream media. Contemporary discourse projects Nazi-like actions onto the Jewish state. After 2000, the myth of Jewish control of the media has been used to undercut attempts to counter antisemitic criticism of Israel.
