Abstract:
Describes the figure and activities of Gyp (Sybille-Gabrielle Marie-Antoinette de Riquetti de Mirabeau, 1849-1932), French novelist, journalist, and caricaturist, against the background of political life at the end of the 19th century in France and the Dreyfus Affair. Analyzes some of her literary works (e.g. the novel "Israël"), her caricatures published in the antisemitic illustrated press, and the variety of antisemitic stereotypes she used. Explains how the fact that she was a woman (who then had no direct access to politics) influenced her activities, as an expression of rebellion against her subordinate condition. Concludes that she was a leading feminine figure of the nationalist Right, and shows how she influenced and helped develop French popular nationalism and antisemitism.
