Abstract:
Unlike some other Judenrat leaders, Czerniaków did not always follow Nazi orders and he attempted to help as many Jews as possible. While the Nazis established Judenräte merely to facilitate the genocide of the Jews, some of the Jewish councils, like that in Warsaw, concentrated on welfare - providing food, etc. The death of adults due to sickness and starvation left many orphans in the ghetto. Although the organization Centos cared for ca. 50,000 children, ca. 3,000 others remained homeless, begging on the street. Czerniaków and Centos declared a "Children's Month" in October-November 1941 in order to raise money to help care for the orphans. A speech delivered by Czerniaków when the project was announced, in which he condemned the apathy of the Jews toward the plight of the children, was found in the Ringelblum archive and is presented on pp. 85-86.
