Abstract:
The contradictory feelings of Austrian Jews during World War I, torn between their love for Austria and their resentment of Austrian antisemitism, were expressed in the writings of Arthur Schnitzler. Schnitzler's articles about the war were deliberately misinterpreted by the German press which made antisemitic comments on his patriotism. Quotes from Schnitzler's diary about the increasing antisemitism in 1914-15. Schnitzler tried to distinguish between his "homeland" ("Heimat"), which he continued to love, and the "fatherland" ("Vaterland") which he could no longer understand. In 1918 he refused to sign a petition on behalf of a Jewish State, considering himself - despite antisemitism - as an Austrian citizen and part of German culture.
