Abstract:
Examines Carolingian illustrations dealing with Jewish themes appearing mainly in Bible and Psalter manuscripts and on miniature ivory sculptures dating from the 9th century. They reflect the attitudes towards the Jews of the Carolingian kings and their spiritual advisers, the higher ranks of the clergy, in the Franconian Empire. Most often the art works depict conflicts in Christian-Jewish relations - e.g. the Church and the Synagogue, allegorically depicted as the Victor and the Vanquished who dwells in the shadow of the Cross. Notes, however, that the strong anti-Jewish polemics of the Church Fathers are not reflected in the illustrations.
