Kurzfassung:
A study of reports on public opinion, prepared by the security services and various government and Nazi Party authorities during the years 1939-1945, reveals general indifference to the fate of the Jews on the part of the German population and the Churches, and widespread knowledge of the extermination operation in the East. More of a reaction is noted in 1943, by the general population which feared acts of retaliation, and by some clergymen on moral and humane grounds, but these protestations disappeared in 1944, perhaps because the public became used to the idea of getting rid of the Jews. The lack of protest on the part of the Churches was due to their heritage of anti-Judaism.
