Abstract:
Attempts to reconstruct the sequence of events and the identity of the perpetrators of the "Kristallnacht" pogrom in Giessen. The two local synagogues were set on fire, windows of Jewish shops and homes were broken, and possessions thrown into the street, plundered or destroyed. However, Jews were not physically assaulted. The perpetrators were mainly SA-men. States that it is hard to determine the extent of popular enthusiasm for the pogrom, but mentions individuals who voiced disapproval or even sheltered Jews in their homes. The trial in 1948 absolved the accused because their crimes did not fit the criminal code and because of supposedly insufficient evidence. Pp. 158-164 contain extracts from the verdict.
