Abstract:
Presents a Yiddish translation and the original Hebrew text, with annotations, of a fragment recently discovered from the ghetto diary of Kalmanovitsh (1885-1944), director of the prewar YIVO Institute in Vilna and a leading intellectual in the ghetto. The fragment, covering the period 16 May-19 July 1942, describes daily life in the ghetto and Kalmanovitsh's forced labor for the Nazis as a researcher, translator, and sorter of Judaica books. This fragment supplements previously published portions of the diary in Yiddish ("YIVO Bleter" 35, 1951), in English ("YIVO Annual of Jewish Social Science" 8, 1952), and in Hebrew (Kalmanovitsh's "Yoman be-ghetto Vilna u-ktavim min ha-izavon she-nimtse'u ba-harissot" (Tel-Aviv: Moreshet; Sifriat Poalim, 1977). The original manuscript is held by the Lithuania Central State Archives in Vilna.
