Abstract: Discusses the revival of Inquisition activity in the first half of the 18th century; 144 autos-da-fé have been identified, of which 125 involved Judaizers. The most active courts were in the south of Spain. Ca. 1,500 crypto-Jews were punished by the Inquisition between 1700-1760. Examines the confessions of Madrid Jews tried in Toledo, which attest to a significant measure of Jewish culture and religious practice - belief in the Jewish God, observance of rites and festivals, endogamous marriage, etc. Concludes that it is difficult to believe that the accusations against the Jews were invented; rather, one may assume that there were several thousand secret Jews in Spain at the time who formed some sort of a community, with leaders, rules, and a sense of solidarity and identity.
