Abstract:
An account, based on Inquisition records, of the trial of Isabel López, a New Christian from Castile, accused of Judaizing. Isabel and her mother were tried in Toledo in 1516, while the father, a well-known tax collector, was tried in 1518. The accused denied all charges, and Isabel proved that the witnesses called against her were her enemies and not objective witnesses. Despite this, and the Church's failure to obtain confessions even under torture, she was burned at the stake. This prominent family was probably chosen for unusually severe punishment as a warning to other Conversos to desist from Judaizing.
