Abstract:
Contends that, in general, anti-Jewish attitudes expressed in Poland in the 16th-18th centuries contained mainly elements imported from Western Europe. Civic groups, which tried to curb the economic activities of the Jews, their main rivals in the economic sphere, voiced anti-Jewish arguments related to the religious polemics between the Church and the Jews. Despite an increase in the power of the Church in Poland during the 16th-18th centuries and a diminishing tolerance for alien religions and nationalities, the Jews of Poland were relatively prosperous and secure due to the protection accorded them by their main partners, the Polish nobility, who benefited from the economic activities of the Jews.
