Kurzfassung:
Examines the anonymous work "Dialogus inter Christianum et Iudeum de fide Catholica", written sometime between 1123 and 1148, in order to better understand the course of rationalization of the Jewish-Christian debate in the intellectual climate of the 12th-century renaissance. Argues that despite similarities with Anselm of Canterbury's "Cur Deus Homo" and the polemical writings of Gilbert Crispin (abbot of Westminster, 1085-1117), the work is not a poor imitation, but is rather intelligent and well-argued, showing an awareness of Jewish beliefs and practices. Analyzes the arguments in the text and states that, in spite of the harsh tone, the author was not more anti-Jewish (as some have said) than Crispin or Anselm. Concludes that the work may reflect the style of the school of Anselm of Laon and William of Champeaux.
