Abstract:
Discusses the Labani (a.k.a. Salvatore Tivoli), Manganetti, and Mortara affairs, all of which involved Jews who were converted but who wished to revert to Judaism (in the Mortara case, the Jewish parents wanted their infant son returned to them), but were hounded by the Church. Under Inquisition law, a convert who reverted to Judaism could be tried and punished for apostasy.
