    Abstract: The Marrano phenomenon is a still unexplored element of Western culture: the presence of the borderline Jewish identity which avoids clear-cut cultural and religious attribution and – precisely as such – prefigures the advent of the typically modern "free-oscillating" subjectivity. Yet, the aim of the book is not a historical study of the Marranos (or conversos), who were forced to convert to Christianity, but were suspected of retaining their Judaism "undercover." The book rather applies the "Marrano metaphor" to explore the fruitful area of mixture and cross-over which allowed modern thinkers, writers and artists of the Jewish origin to enter the realm of universal communication – without, at the same time, making them relinquish their Jewishness which they subsequently developed as a "hidden tradition." The book poses and then attempts to prove the "Marrano hypothesis," according to which modern subjectivity derives, to paraphrase Cohen, "out of the sources of the hidden Judaism": modernity begins not with the Cartesian abstract ego, but with the rich self-reflexive self of Michel de Montaigne who wrestled with his own marranismo in a manner that soon became paradigmatic to other Jewish thinkers entering the scene of Western modernity, from Spinoza to Derrida. The essays in the volume offer thus a new view of a "Marrano modernity," which aims to radically transform our approach to the genesis of the modern subject and shed a new light on its secret religious life as surviving the process of secularization, although merely in the form of secret traces

    Abstract: Arguments over the relationship between Canaanite and Israelite religion often derive from fundamental differences in presupposition, methodology and definition, yet debate typically focuses in on details and encourages polarization between opposing views, inhibiting progress. This volume seeks to initiate a cultural change in scholarly practice by setting up dialogues between pairs of experts in the field who hold contrasting views. Each pair discusses a clearly defined issue through the lens of a particular biblical passage, responding to each other’s arguments and offering their reflections on the process. Topics range from the apparent application of ‘chaos’ and ‘divine warrior’ symbolism to Yahweh in Habakkuk 3, the evidence for ‘monotheism’ in pre-Exilic Judah in 2 Kings 22–23, and the possible presence of ‘chaos’ or creatio ex nihilo in Genesis 1 and Psalm 74. This approach encourages the recognition of points of agreement as well as differences and exposes some of the underlying issues that inhibit consensus. In doing so, it consolidates much that has been achieved in the past, offers fresh ideas and perspective and, through intense debate, subjects new ideas to thorough critique and suggests avenues for further research

    Abstract: This volume offers a thorough introduction to Jewish world literatures in Spanish and Portuguese, which not only addresses the coexistence of cultures, but also the functions of a literary and linguistic space of negotiation in this context. From the Middle Ages to present day, the compendium explores the main Jewish chapters within Spanish- and Portuguese-language world literature, whether from Europe, Latin America, or other parts of the world. No comprehensive survey of this area has been undertaken so far. Yet only a broad focus of this kind can show how diasporic Jewish literatures have been (and are ) – while closely tied to their own traditions – deeply intertwined with local and global literary developments; and how the aesthetic praxis they introduced played a decisive, formative role in the history of literature.     Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Rabbi Samuel Hirsch (Thalfang 1815 - Chicago 1889) was instrumental in the development of Reform Judaism in Europe and the USA. This volume is the first lengthy publication devoted to this striking personality whose significance was no less than that of his contemporaries Abraham Geiger and David Einhorn.En route from Thalfang via Dessau and Luxembourg to Philadelphia, Hirsch left his mark on societal, religious, and philosophical developments in manifold ways. By the time he was appointed Chief Rabbi of the Jewish community in Luxembourg in 1843, he had already written many of his most important works on the philosophy of religion. In them he engaged in debate with the Young Hegelians on the importance of Judaism, the religion that, more than any other, enabled the human actualization of freedom so central to Hegel’s philosophy.Over time Hirsch took an increasingly radical stance on issues such as Jewish rituals and mixed marriage. The goal of his reforms was not assimilation. He strove to strengthen Judaism to meet the demands of modernity and enable its survival in the modern era.Hirsch’s story is key to understanding the transnational history of Reform Judaism and the struggle of Jews to secure a place in history and society.

    Abstract: Der Band thematisiert erstmals die Gattungsinterferenz zwischen Purimspielen und Fastnachtspielen. Der ungefähre zeitliche Zusammenfall des jüdischen Purim-Festes und der christlichen Fastnacht im liturgischen Jahreskreis sowie die jeweilige Performanz einer verkehrten Welt lassen nach wechselseitigen Beeinflussungen fragen. Im Einzelnen wurden jüdisch-christliche Berührungen in Brauchtum und Spiel für wichtige Spiellandschaften wie das Rheinland, die Schweiz, Schwaben oder Tirol in den Blick genommen. Dabei kristallisieren sich von Ort zu Ort trotz gemeinsamer Sujets unterschiedliche Formen des Ausagierens von interreligiösen Dialogen ab. Dennoch sind die performativen Parallelen, die hier erstmals dokumentiert werden, frappierend. Die interdisziplinären Beiträge des Sammelbandes verstehen sich nicht zuletzt als Anstoß für weitergehende Forschungen. In der Summe ergibt sich, dass Purim und Fastnacht von ihrem performativen Potenzial her im Alten Reich künftig nicht mehr unabhängig voneinander betrachtet werden dürfen. Der Sammelband wendet sich an Judaist/-innen, Theolog/-innen, Germanist/-innen, Ethnolog/-innen und Historiker/-innen mit der Ausrichtung auf Spätmittelalter und der Frühen Neuzeit.
    Abstract: The volume examines for the first time the intersection of genres between Purim plays and Shrovetide plays. The approximate temporal coincidence of the Jewish Purim festival and Christian Shrovetide in the liturgical calendar as well as the common enactment of a world turned upside-down suggest the possibility of mutual influences. The interdisciplinary essays are intended to stimulate further research.

    Abstract: Abrahamic scriptures serve as cultural pharmakon, prescribing what can act as both poison and remedy. This collection shows that their sometimes veiled but eternally powerful polemics can both destroy and build, exclude and include, and serve as the ultimate justification for cruelty or compassion. Here, scholars not only excavate these works for their formative and continuing cultural impact on communities, identities, and belief systems, they select some of the most troubling topics that global communities continue to navigate. Their analysis of both texts and their reception help explain how these texts promote norms and build collective identities. Rejecting the notion of the sacred realm as separate from the mundane realm and beyond critical challenge, this collection argues—both implicitly and sometimes transparently—for the presence of the sacred within everyday life and open to challenge. The very rituals, prayers, and traditions that are deemed sacred interweave into our cultural systems in infinite ways. Together, these authors explore the dynamic nature of everyday life and the often-brutal power of these texts over everyday meaning

Er veröffentlichte politische Schriften und eine eindrucksvolle Autobiografie. Während der Französischen Revolution arbeitete er als Geheimagent Preußens in Paris.     Abstract: What can we know about ourselves and the world through the sense of touch and what are the epistemic limits of touch? Scepticism claims that there is always something that slips through the epistemologist’s grasp. A Touch of Doubt explores the significance of touch for the history of philosophical scepticism as well as for scepticism as an embodied form of subversive political, religious, and artistic practice. Drawing on the tradition of scepticism within nineteenth- and twentieth-century continental philosophy and psychoanalysis, this volume discusses how the sense of touch uncovers contradictions within our knowledge of ourselves and the world. It questions 1) what we can know through touch, 2) what we can know about touch itself, and 3) how our experience of touching the other and ourselves throws us into a state of doubt. This volume is intended for students and scholars who wish to reconsider the experience of touching in intersections of philosophy, religion, art, and social and political practice.

    Abstract: Human leadership is a multifaceted topic in the Hebrew Bible from a synchronic as well as diachronic perspective. A large range of distributions emerges from the successive sharpening or modification of different aspects of leadership. While some of them are combined to a complex figuration of leadership, others remain reserved for certain individuals. Furthermore, it can be considered a consensus within scholarly debate, that concepts of leadership have a certain connection to the history of ancient Israel which is, though, hard to ascertain. Following a previous volume that focused on the Pentateuch and the Former Prophets (BZAW 507), this volume deals with different concepts of leadership in selected Prophetic (Hag/Zech; Jer) and Chronistic literature Ezr/Neh; Chr). They are examined in a literary, (religious-/tradition-) historical and theological perspective. Special emphasis is given to phenomena of transforming authority and leadership claims in exilic/post-exilic times. Hence, the volume contributes to biblical theology and sheds new light on the redaction/reception history of the texts. Not least, it provides valuable insights into the history of religious and/or political “authorities” in Israel and Early Judaism(s)

    Abstract: This volume contributes to the growing interest in understanding the phenomenon of prayer and praying in the Hebrew Bible, Early Judaism, and nascent Christianity. Papers by the leading scholars in these fields revisit long-standing questions and chart new paths of inquiry into the nature, form, and practice of addressing the divine in the ancient world. The essays in this volume deal with particular texts of and about prayer, practices of prayer, as well as figures and locations (historical and literary) that are associated with prayer and praying. These studies apply a range of methods and theoretical approaches to prayer and the language of prayer in literatures of Early Judaism and Christianity. Some studies apply the classical methods of biblical studies to Second Temple texts of prayer, including form critical and text critical approaches; others engage in literary and narrative analysis of ancient works that recount discourse directed to the divine. Still other studies draw on anthropological and sociological analyses of prayer or marshal particular theories of discourse, ethics, and moral agency to offer fresh interpretations of address to God in the literature of Second Temple Judaism and earliest Christianity

    Abstract: This volume contains essays by some of the leading scholars in the study of the Jewish religious ideas in the Second Temple period, that led up to the development of early forms of Rabbinic Judaism and Christianity. Close attention is paid to the cosmological ideas to be found in the Ancient Near East and in the Hebrew Bible and to the manner in which the translators of the Hebrew Bible into Greek reflected the creativity with which Judaism engaged Hellenistic ideas about the cosmos and the creation. The concepts of heaven and divine power, human mortality, the forces of nature, combat myths, and the philosophy of wisdom, as they occur in 2 Maccabees, Ben Sira, Wisdom of Solomon and Tobit, are carefully analysed and compared with Greek and Roman world-views. There are also critical examinations of Dead Sea scroll texts, early Jewish prayers and Hebrew liturgical poetry and how they these adopt, adapt and alter earlier ideas. The editors have included appreciations of two major figures who played important roles in the study of the Second Temple period and in the history and development of the ISDCL, namely, Otto Kaiser and Alexander Di Lella, who died recently and are greatly missed by those in the field

    Abstract: This publication uncovers two previously dismissed pre-modern adaptations of the Middle High German Wigalois (1215) by exploring their different approaches to female agency in comparison with the original Wigalois, the Yiddish Viduvilt (14th ct.) and the German Wigoleis (15th ct.). Traditionally, scholarship often concentrated on the Yiddish text presenting female figures as behaving in a "Jewish manner" or embodying famous Jewish mythical figures such as Lilith (see Achim Jaeger / Robert G. Warnock). Rather than trying to argue for or against a figure’s "Jewishness," I evaluate these interpretations from the perspective of Arthurian Literature by showing that the construction of female agency is at the center of all three adaptations of this important chapter of German-Jewish literature and culture

    Abstract: Scholars of the Hebrew Bible used to look at "Prophecy" and "Wisdom" as clearly distinct realms represented by antagonistic and mutually exclusive roles of their central characters: the loyal sage, the pillar of administration, on the one side and the rebellious prophet, criticizing the establishment, on the other. While the influence of wisdom thought on prophetic texts has been a topic in the scholarly debate, the complementary question of the influence of prophetic thought on wisdom texts has rarely been asked. The contributions in this volume look at both questions: They start from the assumption that texts from the Hebrew Bible and the cultures surrounding Ancient Israel all originated from a social stratum of educated scribes, who authored and transmitted these texts. It then seems plausible that wisdom texts might show similar traces of prophetic influence to those of wisdom thoughts found in prophetic texts. The essays give a multifaceted picture concerning the mutual perception of prophets and sages and thus provide a deeper understanding of both wisdom literature and prophecy

    Abstract: Precarious Figurations focuses on the reception of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice in twentieth- and twenty-first-century Germany. Looking at theatrical practices and critical or scholarly discourses from the Weimar Republic to the new millennium, the book explores why the play has served simultaneously as a vehicle for the actualization of anti-Semitic tropes and as a staging ground for the critical exposure of the very logic of anti-Semitism. In particular, the study investigates how the figure of Shylock has come to be both a device in and a stumbling block for attempts to bridge the fundamental rupture in civilization brought about by the Holocaust. The careful analysis of the German reception of Merchant, and in particular of the ways of doing and reading Shylock in the context of painful German, and German-Jewish, discourses of identity and remembrance, is designed to raise fundamental questions – questions concerning not only the staging of Jewishness, the tenacity of anti-Semitism and the difficulties of Holocaust remembrance, but also the general potentials and limitations of theatrical interventions into cultural conflicts

    Abstract: In the wake of the spatial and affective turns in Literary Studies in general, and the study of Jewish literatures in particular, this volume shifts focus from the extensity of exile and return to the intensities of sense of place and belonging across a moving landscape of 20th and 20st century literatures, Jewish and other. It brings together contemporary writers and literary scholars who collectively map these intensities onto a bodily word world in transit and textures of habitable, readable space as passage.Works by Hélène Cixous, Cécile Wajsbrot, Alex Epstein, Almog Behar, and Svetlana Boym explore sites made up of layers of passages, taking configurations of sayability and readability as forms, poetic and political, of inhabiting the material world. The contributions by literary scholars explore the theoretical potential of a mapping of such sites in studies of modalities of belonging and unbelonging in modern and contemporary works of literature.The volume collects a collaborative investigation of the exigencies and potentialities of sense of place and belonging through literature, Jewish and other.     Abstract: Writing a history of art dealing in the Third Reich presents a special challenge, not only because of the difficult situation regarding source material. The actors’ activities are enmeshed in outrageous contradictions involving complicity and sabotage. The range of issues includes the day-to-day business of art dealers through to the resistance to restrictive regulations, from auction trade through to black market, from numerous crimes involving not only Jewish collectors and dealers, through to art theft in countries occupied by German forces. In this book, art historians and economic historians investigate the art market and its mechanisms under National Socialism, the role of art theft and, in particular, that of modern and "degenerate" works of art in the art market.

    Abstract: In his literary texts, which remained mostly unpublished, Gustav Landauer (1870-1919) anticipated the linguistically skeptical ideas of his time. In new intertextual, intermedial and muted writing styles, he confronts the inadequacy of language in a creative manner. Through his entanglements with works of German literature and music, the Jewish author Landauer wrote himself into German culture. The presentation and analysis of all literary texts provides an important contribution to both research on Landauer and the study of cultural and social functions of intermediality and intertextuality.
    Abstract: In seinen größtenteils unveröffentlichten literarischen Texten nimmt Gustav Landauer (1870?1919) sprachskeptische Gedanken seiner Zeit voraus. In neuen intertextuellen, intermedialen und schweigenden Schreibweisen begegnet er der Unzulänglichkeit von Sprache kreativ. Durch Verschränkungen mit Werken deutscher Literatur und Musik schreibt der jüdische Autor Landauer sich zudem in die deutsche Kultur ein. Die Darstellung und Analyse aller literarischen Texte leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Landauer-Forschung, aber auch zum Studium der kulturellen und sozialen Funktionen von Intermedialität und Intertextualität.

    Abstract: After 1933, New York City gave shelter to many leading German and German-Jewish intellectuals. Stripped of their German citizenship by the Nazi-regime, these public figures either stayed in the New York area or moved on to California and other places. This compendium, adopting the title of a famous volume published by Klaus and Erika Mann in 1939, explores the impact the US, and NYC in particular, had on these authors as well as the influence they in turn exerted on US intellectual life. Moreover, it addresses the transformations that took place in the exiled intellectuals’ thinking when it was translated into another language and addressed to an American audience. Among the individuals presented in this volume, are such prominent names as T.W. Adorno, H. Arendt, W. Benjamin, E. Bloch, B. Brecht, S. Kracauer, the Mann family, S. Morgenstern, and E. Panofsky. The authors of the essays in this compendium were free to choose the angle (biography, theory, politics) or aspect (a single work, a personal constellation) deemed best to illuminate the given intellectual’s work. Acclaimed NYC photographer Fred Stein, a German-Jewish refugee from Dresden, produced numerous portraits of exiled intellectuals and artists. A selection of these compelling portraits is reproduced in this book for the first time

    Abstract: This volume is comprised of 14 contributions, which are revised and expanded versions of lectures held at an international conference on Stefan Zweig that took place in Israel in 2004. The essays focus on Zweig's biographical writings (for example Erasmus and Fouché), as well as on several aspects of his literary works that have been neglected since the revival of academic studies of his writings and career commenced some 25 years ago. These include: Zweig's conception of the daemonic, Zweig and Christianity, the discourse of love in his writings, Zweig as an Austrian eulogist, his understanding of theater, etc. Contributors from Austria, Germany, France, Belgium, Slovenia, and Israel bring refreshingly diverse perspectives and new concerns to this scholarly project.

Diese Bemerkung wird nun nicht nur, wie üblich, als Hinweis auf Adorno gelesen, sondern auf ihre poetologischen Implikationen hin befragt. Durch minutiöse Lektüre, poetologische Analyse, intertextuellen Vergleich mit Texten Adornos und Einbezug von erst kürzlich veröffentlichten Briefen erschließt sich der hermetische Text in überraschender Weise.
    Abstract: This is a study of one of the few prose texts by an author much better known for his poetry. It is inspired by Celan's remark that »Gespräch im Gebirg« was written "in memory of an encounter that never happened." Instead of taking the conventional course and treating this remark as a reference to Adorno, the author examines the poetological implications behind it. Though hermetic at first glance, the text yields up a surprising number of its apparent enigmas when subjected to close reading, poetological analysis, intertextual comparison with texts by Adorno, and reference to letters recently published for the first time.

"Die Blutsäule" is, however, written in idiosyncratic German, with many reminiscences of the language of the Bible. Given that this was also the language of the 'hated' perpetrators of the Holocaust, the complexion of the novel is intricate indeed. The study reconstructs its religious, historical, and literary background.

    Abstract: Die neue Gattung des deutsch-jüdischen historischen Romans im 19. Jahrhundert sollte das jüdische Publikum mit Lesestoff versorgen. Bei dieser Gelegenheit konnte die Vorstellung von Juden und Judentum zurechtgerückt und die jüdische Geschichte neugeschrieben werden, jeweils im Einklang mit der Ideologie der jüdischen Hauptströmungen. Die Romane wurden von Rabbinern, Lehrern und anderen Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens verfasst und in den großen jüdischen Zeitungen veröffentlicht, bevor sie in Buchform erschienen. Sie erfreuten sich großer Beliebtheit besonders bei jugendlichen Lesern. Obwohl nationale Aspekte der jüdischen Geschichte sorgsam ausgespart wurden, ermöglichten die behandelten Themen und Helden dem jüdischen Publikum, auf die eigene Geschichte stolz zu sein. Durch ihre hebräische Übersetzung bzw. Neugestaltung unterstützten diese Romane die jüdisch-nationale Erweckungsbewegung in Osteuropa und Israel.
    Abstract: The 19th century German-Jewish historical novel was born of the need to supply readers with popular novels, a novelty in Jewish literature. Through the back door it provided a chance to update images of Jews and Judaism and rewrite Jewish history according to the ideological needs of the main participants in the struggle out of the Ghetto. Rabbis, teachers and community leaders wrote novels that first appeared in the main papers, the "AZJ" and "Der Israelit". The novels enjoyed great popularity, especially among youth. Though they rejected any national aspect of Jewish history, the very choice of themes and heroes enhanced national pride. They were translated/adapted into Hebrew and played a major role in the national awakening in Eastern Europe and in Israel.

    Abstract: After 1933, on a scale hitherto largely unreflected in literary research, German exiles engaged with the phenomenon of National Socialist anti-Semitism. This engagement ranged from the collection of documents to the 'dialectics of enlightenment'. The study reconstructs this historical discourse with special reference to the way it is reflected in the Zeitstück genre (topical dramas on pressing contemporary issues). In the process it inquires into the extent to which the dramatic genre imposes formal aesthetic constraints that involve a restriction of theoretical interest in anti-Semitism to a small number of constantly recurring motifs.
    Abstract: In einer bislang von der Forschung kaum beachteten Breite haben sich nach 1933 deutsche Exilanten mit dem nationalsozialistischen Antisemitismus auseinandergesetzt - von der Dokumentensammlung bis zur »Dialektik der Aufklärung«. Die Studie rekonstruiert diesen historischen Diskurs, insbesondere soweit er die literarische Form des Zeitstücks angenommen hat. Erörtert wird dabei, inwieweit diese dramatische Gattung ästhetische Formvorgaben aufweist, die das theoretische Interesse am Antisemitismus auf einige wenige, immer wiederkehrende Motive beschränken.

    Abstract: This volume examines the Jewish identity of the Austrian writers and thinkers Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig, Richard Beer-Hofmann, Karl Kraus, and Theodor Herzl in the cultural context of the Austrian fin de siècle and the cultural crisis that went with it. All of them drew more or less consciously on a rich Jewish heritage, which they either turned away from (Kraus, Zweig) or sought a new rapprochement with (Beer-Hofmann, Herzl). The dynamic tensions resulting from the interplay between the absorption of Austrian culture, on the one hand, and the imprint of century-old Jewish traditions and values on the other find their expression in the different responses of these Austrian-Jewish personalities to the culture and cultural crisis of the fin de siècle. As such they can be considered paradigmatic for the situation of all European Jews.

    Abstract: In the eight decades after the 1830s, ghetto literature became the most important genre in the development of Jewish literature in German. In its first section, this documentation outlines the reception accorded to the genre up to the early 1930s with reference to and commentaries on over 600 sources. The second section facilitates access to the primary texts by providing an annotated bibliography, brief biographies of the just under 100 mostly Jewish authors of ghetto literature, and indexes of names and subject matter.

Jahrhunderts nach. Im »Teil 2: Autoren und Werke der Ghettoliteratur« (Band 55) werden die Primärtexte durch eine annotierte Bibliographie, Kurzbiographien der knapp hundert meist jüdischen Autoren von Ghettoliteratur, eine Bibliographie der Sekundärliteratur sowie Personen- und Sachindices erschlossen.

The articles in this volume examine Hermann's achievement as a novelist, a chronicler of life in Berlin, a critic of art and literature, and an observer of the German-Jewish response to life.

At the same time, this perspective broadens the perspective on the phenomenon of exile literature to include the tensions between 'exile and homecoming'. The essays discuss German, Hebrew, and French exile literature, with the emphasis on the 20th century.

    Abstract: Welche Entwicklung erfuhr der Antisemitismus in Spanien, als nach dem Vertreibungsedikt (1492) das Land nicht länger ein Ort der Koexistenz verschiedener ethnischer Gruppen war? Dies war das zentrale Thema eines Kolloquiums in Konstanz (Mai 2000), dessen Ergebnisse hier vorgestellt werden. An dem Kolloquium nahmen Anthropologen, Historiker und Literaturwissenschaftler teil. Diese interdisziplinäre Annäherung konzentrierte sich auf die Faktoren, Räume, Zahlen und Stimmen, die in den antijüdischen (und damit antisemitischen) Diskurs involviert waren, sowohl in ihrem historischen Kontext als auch in ihrer literarischen Darstellung. Bei dem letzten Thema ist dem apologetischen Aspekt ebensoviel Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet worden wie dem kritischen.
    Abstract: What development did anti-Semitism take in Spain when, after the Banishment Edict (1492), the country was no longer a locus of co-existence for different ethnic groups? This was the topic central to the colloquium in Konstanz (May 2000), the results of which are presented here. The colloquium united anthropologists, historians and literary scholars. This interdisciplinary approach focused on the factors, spaces, figures and voices involved in anti-Jewish (and hence anti-Semitic) discourse, both in their historical context and in their literary representation. On the latter issue, as much attention is given to the apologetic as to the critical aspect.

    Abstract: Thomas Mann's (1875-1955) engagement with contemporary Jews and his epic portrayals of them trace the ups and downs of history and reveal them as such. In his work, the Jews are given a key role in the debates of the 20th century. From Naphta and Krokowski in »The Magic Mountain« and Joseph and Moses there are connecting links and analogies between Germans and Jews, all the way up to Fitelberg and Breisacher in »Doctor Faustus«. The chronological treatment foregrounds both continuity and change in Mann's views, the mixture of fascination and prejudice they reveal, and their ongoing differentiation and refinement. The study (first published in French in 1995) deepens our awareness of the structural unity of Mann's oeuvre and makes a contribution to research on mentalities.

Die Juden erhalten bei ihm eine Schlüsselstellung in den Debatten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Von Naphta und Krokowski im »Zauberberg« über Joseph und Moses führen Verbindungslinien mit Analogien zwischen Juden und Deutschen bis zu Fitelberg und Breisacher im »Doktor Faustus«. Das chronologische Vorgehen hebt Kontinuität und Wandlung von Ansichten hervor, die von Faszination und Vorurteilen geprägt, sich im Laufe der Zeit verfeinern. Diese Studie (die französische Orginalausgabe erschien 1995) vertieft den Blick für die strukturelle Einheit des Gesamtwerkes und leistet einen Beitrag zur Erforschung der Mentalitäten.

    Abstract: This first annotated and variously indexed edition of 14th-16th century Yiddish glosses on the »Book of Job« provides scholars working on the history of the German language and in the field of Yiddish (and Jewish) studies with a vast fund of material (15,000 word and sentence glosses from 11 manuscripts and printed versions) presented here in the context of its transmission. As such, it is a stimulating source for all kinds of different studies.

    Abstract: By illustrating the quintessentially different self-perceptions of three contemporary German writers of Jewish background, this book examines a range of German-Jewish identities in a socio-cultural context in Wilhelmine Germany. Its recognition of the ways in which the individual's cultural identity - Moritz Goldstein's (1880-1977) cultural Zionism, Julius Bab's (1880-1955) synthesis of 'Deutschtum' and 'Judentum' and Ernst Lissauer's (1882-1937) advocacy of complete assimilation - was constantly refashioned in response to the challenges of increasing anti-Semitism, enables one to reach a fuller understanding of the evolving self-perception of German Jews.
    Abstract: Indem es die im Wesentlichen unterschiedlichen Selbstwahrnehmungen von drei zeitgenössischen deutschen Schriftstellern jüdischer Abstammung aufzeigt, untersucht dieses Buch eine Reihe deutsch-jüdischer Persönlichkeiten in einem sozio-kulturellen Kontext im wilhelminischen Deutschland. Die Erkenntnis der Art und Weise, wie die kulturelle Identität des Individuums - Moritz Goldsteins (1880-1977) kultureller Zionismus, Julius Babs (1880-1955) Synthese von "Deutschtum" und "Judentum" und Ernst Lissauers (1882-1937) Befürwortung der vollständigen Assimilation - sich als Reaktion auf die Herausforderungen des zunehmenden Antisemitismus ständig wandelte, ermöglicht dem Leser, ein besseres Verständnis der sich entwickelnden Selbstwahrnehmung der deutschen Juden zu erlangen.

    Abstract: Zwischen 1933 und 1938 entstand in Deutschland eine vielfältige und von den Nationalsozialisten geduldete jüdische Literatur, die den deutschen Juden als ein Mittel der Selbstvergewisserung diente und sich nicht selten als Handlungsanleitung anbot. Gestützt auf erzählende Literatur macht die Untersuchung in einer ausführlichen Übersicht und in Einzelanalysen ein literarisches Leben sichtbar, das einerseits die Bandbreite der innerjüdischen Diskussion widerspiegelt und sich andererseits im Widerspruch gegen die entwürdigenden Zumutungen der nichtjüdischen Umwelt behauptet.

Jahrhundert werden aus christlicher Perspektive entworfene Bilder von Juden, ihrer Religion, ihrer Mentalität sowie Verhaltensforderungen für den Umgang von Christen und Juden analysiert, zugleich werden die Voraussetzungen und Wirkungen der literarischen Konstrukte im Zusammenhang mit der einschlägigen theologischen und sozialgeschichtlichen Forschung untersucht.
    Abstract: The volume is a contribution to the history of the Jews in medieval Europe and seeks to achieve more precise purchase on this complex culture-historical process by concentrating on one specific element of it. The articles analyze literary testimonies in German from the 12th to the 17th centuries written from a Christian perspective and containing images of Jews, their religion, their mentality, and recommendations for dealings between Christians and Jews. At the same time, the preconditions and the impact of these literary constructs are discussed against the backdrop of relevant research from the fields of theology and social history.

    Abstract: Erstmals werden in dieser Studie die Äußerungen des Wiener Fin-de-siècle-Schriftstellers Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) zum Thema Judentum und Antisemitismus systematisch untersucht. Diese stellen nicht nur aufgrund ihrer Anzahl, Kontinuität und ihres über mehr als 50 Jahre reichenden Entstehungszeitraumes (1880-1931) ein Unikum dar. Sie sind Ausdruck einer intensiven und vielfältigen Auseinandersetzung mit der eigenen Zugehörigkeit zum Judentum, zu Österreich und zur deutschen Kultur und zählen zu den damals seltenen Zeugnissen für eine permanente Hellhörigkeit gegenüber jeglichen antisemitischen Tendenzen.
    Abstract: This study is the first to essay a systematic examination of the statements made by turn-of-the-century Viennese author Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) on Judaism and anti-Semitism. They are unique from various points of view, including their number, their continuity, and the long stretch of time they extend over (1880-1931). Over and above that, they are the expression of an intensive and many-sided engagement with Schnitzler's own Jewishness, with Austria, and with German culture. Further, they are remarkable for their seismographic sensitivity to anti-Semitic tendencies of any kind, a quality that was anything but widespread at the time.

    Abstract: For a long time Moses Mendelssohn's (1729-1786) »Jerusalem« was one of the neglected works of the German Enlightenment period. Only in recent years has it started to be given the critical attention it merits, albeit almost exclusively from the perspective of the history of emancipation and of minorities. The present study examines the work in terms of the history of ideas and places it in the context of contemporaneous European thought, demonstrating that in it Mendelssohn presents a highly innovative angle on the issue of human rights and the possibility of pluralistic societies.
    Abstract: Moses Mendelssohns (1729-1786) »Jerusalem« gehörte lange zu den vergessenen Texten der deutschen Aufklärung. Erst in letzter Zeit ist er wieder in das Blickfeld der Forschung gerückt - freilich fast ausschließlich unter emanzipations- und minderheitengeschichtlichen Fragestellungen. Dass Mendelssohn auch ein hochinnovatives Votum zur Menschenrechtsfrage und zur Möglichkeit pluralistischer Gesellschaften vorlegt, wird in dieser Studie ideengeschichtlich rekonstruiert und im europäischen Denkhorizont verortet.

Es gibt eine kurzes Kapitel über Frauen und Philosemitismus. Das Schlusskapitel lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Schuldgefühle, die in einer Anzahl dieser Texte zu Tage treten.
    Abstract: The work deals with philo-Semitic texts by the non-Jewish authors of the 19th century. The writer who provides the largest body of relevant material is Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, but works by Gutzkow, Bettine von Arnim, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Hebbel, Freytag, Raabe, Fontane, Grillparzer, Ebner-Eschenbach, Anzengruber, and Ferdinand von Saar are also examined, as are several tales by the Alsatian authors Erckmann and Chatrian. There is a short chapter on women and philo-Semitism. The conclusion draws attention to the feelings of guilt that are revealed in a number of the texts.
