Abstract:
The liberal journal "Der Morgen" was founded in 1925. Between 1925-33, German Jewry's opposition to antisemitism was primarily intellectual; every issue of the journal contained at least one article relating to Nazi ideology and its roots. The Nazi takeover in 1933 forced "Der Morgen" to reconsider Jewish identity and to turn from the past to current Jewish problems. Increasingly, the issues of vocational retraining and emigration appeared in the paper. Germany's rejection of the Jews, demonstrated by the Nuremberg Laws, caused Jews to turn to their own community and culture; articles on the cultural rebirth dominated the journal's pages in 1935-38, and Zionist ideas and images gained greater popularity. In November 1938, after the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, the paper was shut down by the Nazi authorities.
