Abstract:
Presents several official documents and excerpts from documents, with an introduction and commentary. Describes the manifestation and scope of postwar antisemitism, both official and on the grass-roots level, in Ukraine in 1944, after its liberation by the Soviet Army. Official antisemitism was manifested in the authorities' obstruction of Jews who wish to return to Ukraine from the Soviet hinterland; the ban on commemoration of the Babi Yar massacre; reluctance to oppose antisemitism; and, in many cases, refusal to return flats and other property to their former Jewish owners. The attached documents describe, inter alia, antisemitic incidents in Kyiv and show that the authorities were inclined to lay the blame for antisemitism on the Jews themselves and to accuse them, especially in Kyiv and Chernovtsy, of Jewish "nationalism".
