Abstract:
Argues that the lack of popularity of Manea (in exile from Romania since 1986) in Romania reflects not only professional envy but also antisemitism. In the post-communist era, two articles that he published about the fascist past of some prominent Romanian intellectuals, such as Mircea Eliade, stirred up anger against him. He was "invited" to emigrate after criticizing the chauvinism of the antisemite Cornelius Tudor. The subsequent demonization of Manea was grounded in conspiracy theories about the Jews besmirching Romania. Manea et al., including Shafir, were considered traitors for downplaying Romania's communist trauma (for which the Jews were largely held responsible). Romanian extreme nationalist intellectuals claimed that the Jewish attempt to stress the uniqueness of the Holocaust was undermined by Jewish involvement in communism. There is an element of Holocaust denial in recent Romanian comparisons between the Holocaust and the "Gulag".
