Abstract:
Discusses the persecution (pogroms, massacres, and forced conversions) of Jews in the 14th century and, in response, efforts of Jewish apologists to reply to Christian polemics by challenging Christian doctrines and defending Jewish beliefs. Focuses on the Castilian poetry of the Converso Ferrant Sánchez de Talavera, whose works appeared in the anthology "El Cancionero de Baena" (1445), which contains poems by other Conversos as well. By citing selections (in the original and in English translation), illustrates how these poems clearly reflect the Jewish polemical tradition in Spain, in its defense of Jewish religious ideas that were the target of Christian dispute and abuse. The poet uses indirect means, such as questions rather than statements, to disguise the boldness of his protest in order to avoid persecution.
