Abstract:
A concise history of the "Black Book". The idea to publish a collection of eyewitness accounts on the Holocaust in the USSR emerged in the USA in 1942; it was to be a joint Soviet-American edition. The Soviet version of the book was prepared in late 1945-early 1946, and some of its materials were sent abroad, but the publication was suppressed by the authorities. Only in 1980 was a version of the "Black Book" published, for the first time, in Israel. In the 1990s, the restored "Black Book" was published in Lithuania, Ukraine, France, and Germany. Reflects on the question why the Soviet authorities suppressed the publication of the "Black Book" in the 1940s. Among the reasons were the emphasis in the manuscript on the anti-Jewish aspects of the Nazi horrors, the stress on the heroism of Jews, and frequent mention of non-German participants in the genocide.
