Abstract:
One of the few Karaite sources on the Chmielnicki pogroms is a Hebrew "piyyut" (liturgical poem) written by Josef ben Jeshua in 1650. Josef, formerly a "hazan" (cantor) in the Karaite congregation of Derazhnaya (Derizno), saved himself from the Cossacks by fleeing to the fortified town of Lutsk. Like Rabbanite writers, he described (though only in general terms, without reference to specific places) massacres, destruction, rape, forced conversion; but unlike them, he mistakenly believed that in 1650 the Cossacks were already defeated and rejoiced in thoughts of revenge. Includes the Hebrew text (MS Firkovich Heb. I, no. 854) with a German translation.
Note:
With the Hebrew text (MS Firkovich Heb. I, no. 854) and a German translation (pp. 162-167).
