Abstract:
Presents a brief history of the Dönme or Sabbateans, descendants of the followers of Sabbatai Zvi, and proceeds to discuss Turkish views of this secretive, isolationist group. Nationalist Islamists have viewed the Dönme as inspirers of the Young Turks' revolution and of the secular republic. "Scholarship" and journalism have identified the Sabbateans with Jews and Freemasons. Since the 1990s in particular, the Turkish press has featured articles with antisemitic stereotypes; the Dönme are accused of aiming at world domination and of sexual immorality. Thus, they are viewed as a double threat to Islamic Turkey. At times, an anti-Zionist element is present in the antisemitic criticism of these people.
