Abstract:
The interwar Polish Catholic Church played a major role in fostering nationalistic antisemitism, and this trend has continued in post-1989 independent Poland. Examines two opposing positions within the Church which have emerged since 1989, commonly called the "Open Church" and the "Closed Church". The latter rejects the Vatican II guidelines for reforming Catholic theology in regard to the Jews and the charge of deicide and for encouraging Christian-Jewish dialogue. In contrast, members of the "Open Church" support dialogue with Jews and the elimination of anti-Jewish prejudice. Provides details about personalities and events involving both groups.
Note:
On two opposing positions within the Polish Catholic Church in support for or rejection of dialogue with Jews.
