Abstract:
It was only in 2005 that the president of Greece decreed that a commemoration of the Holocaust would be held in the country. During the 59 years that had elapsed from the end of World War II, the Greek state and society had neglected the murder of 87% of the prewar Jewish population. Relates events of the Holocaust in Salonika, including the "registration" of Jews in July 1942, the use of 2,000-3,000 of them for forced labor, the seizure and destruction of the city's Jewish cemetery in December 1942, and the deportations to death camps in 1943. Greek collaborators took part in the implementation of every stage of the Nazi anti-Jewish policies. After the war, authorities punished Jewish collaborators with the Nazis, but not the Greek collaborators. Only a miniscule part of the Jewish businesses and real estate properties which were seized were returned to survivors. A commemoration ceremony was held in Greece; however, in all other countries such ceremonies were preceded by self-criticism, apologies, and efforts at informing the people about the fate of the Jews, and this did not happen in Greece.
