Abstract:
In focusing on ghettoization, deals with the Holocaust as spatial process and how this process unfolded at the local level. In Budapest, ghettoization was implemented in June 1944, following a policy of concentration within dispersion. This involved several ghettos of varying sizes dispersed within the city, mainly in Pest. In November 1944, under the Arrow Cross regime, the Jews were concentrated in two ghettos: the International ("protected") ghetto, and the Pest ghetto. Examines how these concentrated and divided spaces were redefined, negotiated, and inhabited, and how socio-spatial mobility affected the life worlds of both Christians and Jews. Based on documents from Hungarian archives.
