Abstract:
In 1881-82, the "narodniki" welcomed the pogroms that broke out in Russia. They were impressed by the spontaneity of the pogroms and by the mass involvement of the Ukrainian peasantry. Narodnaya Volya welcomed them enthusiastically, seeing in the pogroms a first class protest of the people against one group of exploiters. Chornyi Peredel's reaction was more restrained. Jewish "narodniki", members of the latter organization - Lev Deich, Pavel Akselrod, and others - were in a difficult position. They could not defend the victims of the class rage of the people, but at the same time they saw that some of the "narodniki" leaders (Romanenko, Tikhomirov, etc.) were driven by antisemitism. Narodnaya Volya regarded all the Jews as exploiters. Akselrod began to write a brochure aiming to explain to Jewish youth the "narodnikis'" viewpoint on the "Jewish question". The drafts of the brochure show Akselrod's own views on it and its solution in Russia. Deich saw the solution in Jewish assimilation, but Akselrod was against it and hinted at mass Jewish emigration to America or Palestine.
